KS2 Participation Award

FAQ

Key Stage 2 Participation Award
Increasing physical activity levels of 7 - 11 year olds

FAQ

A list of frequently asked questions (with answers!) will be displayed and regularly updated with further questions, on the website. Here are a few examples:

To obtain GOLD, the minimum qualification in Activity Type ‘A’ is 2 hrs Curriculum Time PE. What if my class only do 1hr 30mins of curriculum PE?
The government says that all schools should be providing a minimum of 2hrs high quality PE in curriculum time for all pupils. This Participation Award must therefore endorse this message. If a class does less than 2hrs in the curriculum, efforts must be made to reach the minimum 2hrs either by increasing the scheduled PE time or providing extra ‘in-class’ PE activities like ‘wake ‘n’ shake’.

How do I help my class to participate in more physical activity outside school?
The website lists all local clubs with Clubmark Accreditation that therefore already have a well developed junior setup (with CRB checks, etc). In most cases, they would be most happy to receive new members. There is also a link to the Local Sports Club Directory produced by Matt Hewison (Scarborough Borough Council Sports Development Officer).

How do I know exactly how much ‘time’ a school event qualifies for?
Physical Activity - ‘Event Time Blocks’
The website will contain a regularly updated list of Sports Association/Partnership events with the ‘time block’ that each activity qualifies for. E.g. The Cross Country Race does not last an hour but will qualify for a 1hr time block of Type ‘B’ Organised Activity due to the overall effect on the child – the fact that the child actually bothered to get up, get out, and attempt to run, completely encompasses the whole ethos of this Award.

The Log Books mention ‘Stamp/stickers’ – a stamp would make it easier for our school or club to quickly officially validate activity. Where do I get them from?
Contact S Staveley who will be able to order a self-inking stamp for you. See Gladstone Road Junior School sample stamp below. The cost will be approx £17.

My child plays golf at a proper golf club every Saturday. She’s only walking so does this count for the award?
Yes, she is participating in a recognised sport. The whole idea behind this award is getting children to participate in sport. 3hrs on a golf course = 3hrs Type ‘C’ (informal activity). 1hr coaching with the golf pro or Tri-golf at a school club = 1hr Type ‘B’ (formal activity).

My child wants to be in an after-school club but cannot get into any. She is shy so hasn’t joined a club outside school. She does, however, go swimming 3 times a week and horse-riding at the weekend. Why can’t she get more than a BRONZE when she does so much sport?
She would definitely achieve BRONZE and be close to SILVER. Joining a swimming or riding club would give her some kind of coaching to enable her to develop her skills further – giving her 2hrs Type ‘B’ (formal activity) to help achieve at least SILVER.

What if I lose my Log Book?
If you lose a log book in the first week, you may be able to obtain another copy from your teacher. You will, however, still have to obtain all the signatures again from activities. Losing a book later in the Award period will make it very difficult to remember and obtain all signatures again.

FAQs Update (June 2009)

  • For ‘Curriculum PE/Games’ (Type A) activity, the actual allocated PE time should qualify but this MUST NOT include any travelling time. (i.e. deduct travelling time from the allocated PE time.)
  • The class teacher should clearly state to all pupils how much time the lesson qualifies for and which ‘Activity Type’ it is.
  • My child went to a gymnastics event at the weekend. How much time does this qualify for? They are allowed to count actual ‘participation time’. Breaks, lunch-time, sat watching others and travelling time, does not count. A weekend competition will typically qualify for approximately 2-3 hours activity – Type ‘B’ (Organised Activity). Warm-up activity does count.
  • The school Kwik Cricket team went to play in a tournament in school time. How much time does this qualify for? Actual match time qualifies – e.g. If the team plays 4 matches, this will typically be 4 hours of ‘Organised School Activity’.
